Details About eBay Seller Fees for the UK

eBay's fundamental seller fee is known as the final value fee. This fee is assessed on the total sale amount, encompassing shipping costs and sales tax. Its calculation varies based on three key factors:

  • • the item category
  • • whether you operate an eBay store
  • • your chosen subscription plan
  • Refer to the tables below for a breakdown of this fee across different scenarios. Additionally, note that the final value fee may undergo further modifications based on your seller status. Understanding and optimizing this fee structure is vital for maximizing profits and competitiveness on eBay.

    Top Rated Plus Sellers

Business sellers can achieve Top Rated status on eBay. Once qualified, they are eligible for a 10% discount on the percentage portion of their final value fee. This discount applies to "premium service listings," which indicate superior shipping and return policies. Sellers typically receive this discount on their end-of-month invoice.

Here are some key terms associated with the Top Rated discount program. To qualify, you must have completed at least 100 transactions and reached £1,000 (€1,500) in sales to UK or the Irish buyers within the last 12 months. You must also be registered as a business seller on either eBay.co.uk (You can start your business in the UK with Startxpress!) or eBay.ie. Please refer to eBay's documentation for full details.

If you use the "Top Rated" option in our calculator, we assume you've verified your eligibility and made sure your listing qualifies as a "Premium Service Listing. It's important to note that this discount is applied to your fees, not the sale amount. For example, if your original fee was 11%, the 10% "Top Rated" discount wouldn't reduce your fee to 1%. Instead, the discount would be calculated as 10% of your fee and then subtracted from your total fees.

Sellers failing to meet performance expectations

In contrast to the "Top Rated" discount, sellers rated "Below Standard" are subject to penalties. Regardless of seller type, they incur an additional 6% fee on top of their existing final value fee. Unlike the rebate, this penalty fee is calculated based on the total sale amount.

Another indicator that sellers are not meeting performance expectations is receiving "Item not as described" return requests that are marked as "Very High" in their Service Metrics Dashboard within eBay's Seller Hub interface. Sellers with this status will be charged an additional 4% of final value fees for sales in the affected categories during the following calendar month.

For accounts with both "below expectations" statuses, eBay's UK documentation doesn't explicitly state whether both penalties will apply simultaneously. However, similar to eBay US and eBay Canada, which clarify that these penalties do not stack and only the below standard penalty applies, our calculator assumes the same for eBay UK.

    More About Fees

In addition, there are additional fees associated with selling internationally, promoting your listings, potential sales tax processing, and various miscellaneous selling fees, such as making your listing title bold. Our calculator is equipped to handle all of these aspects as well. Just make sure you check the appropriate boxes and enter your values. For more information on these fees, please see the detail sections below

Note that the final value fee is only applied when you successfully complete a sale.

Final Value Fees for Private Sellers

For private sellers, the final value fee is generally the same for all item categories, with the exception of the "Trainers" category. Please note that the fees listed below include 20% VAT. However, for items listed in the "Trainers" category with a sale price of £100 or more, there is a special rate of 8% + £0.30 which replaces the standard fees listed in the table below.

If you're a business seller, the final value fee varies a lot more. The two tables below outline the fees for each category.

Final Value Fee Table for Business Sellers

For business sellers, please note that the fees listed below do not include VAT. If you select "Business Seller" as your seller type in our calculator, a "VAT on Fees" field will appear, allowing you to input your VAT rate for applying it to eBay fees. Starting February 1st, 2022, new listings created by business sellers in certain Collectables categories will benefit from a reduced fixed order fee of 10p (compared to the standard 30p) for orders with a total sales price of up to £10. Additionally, the same fixed fee reduction applies to all new listings created by business sellers on or after April 19, 2022, in all Home, Furniture & DIY categories.

    International Fee

The International Fee is a percentage fee charged when you make sales outside of the United Kingdom and varies depending on your seller type and the location of your buyer. This fee is calculated based on the "total sale amount," which includes shipping costs. According to eBay, Northern Europe includes Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

    Promoted Listings Fee

In the UK, Promoted Listings offer sellers various fee structures: upfront flat fees, flat fees per ad click, or percentage fees based on the chosen ad rate. For percentage-based fees, the ad rate is a percentage of the total sale amount, including shipping costs, similar to the calculation method used for the final value fee. Notably, this fee is incurred only when a buyer clicks on the promoted listing and completes the purchase of the promoted item within 30 days of that click. Furthermore, the fee is determined by the ad rate effective at the time the promoted listing was last clicked by the buyer.

If using a flat fee, activate the "Other Costs" field in our calculator and input your fixed fee. Alternatively, if employing a percentage-based ad rate, activate the "Promoted Listing" field and input your percentage. For private sellers, our calculator automatically adds a 20% VAT on top of the promoted listing ad rate to maintain consistency with other eBay fees (which already include VAT). For business sellers, VAT is added to the promoted listing ad rate only if specified in the "VAT on Fees" field.

Notes About VAT in the UK

VAT (Value Added Tax) is applicable to all transactions, including fees and revenue. The standard VAT rate in the UK is 20%. For detailed information on VAT rates, please refer to the official government website of the UK or Free UK VAT Calculator.

eBay incorporates VAT into its fees and tables for private sellers, whereas it excludes VAT in its fees and tables for business sellers. Consequently, if you indicate that you are a business seller in our calculator by selecting "Business Seller" as the seller type, a field labeled "VAT on Fees" will appear. In this field, you can input the VAT rate you wish to apply to your fees. Simply enter a numerical value, and our calculator will add the specified VAT to your fees.

Regarding VAT on revenue, our calculator includes a corresponding field where you can input the VAT rate you want to apply to the revenue (the price of the item sold plus the shipping charge). Essentially, this involves allocating a portion of the revenue to cover VAT.

Reclaiming VAT on eBay Fees in the UKOther Miscellaneous Fees

Business sellers can typically reclaim the Value Added Tax (VAT) paid on goods and services purchased for business use. This includes VAT paid on eBay fees. For instance, in our calculator, indicating that you are a business seller allows you to enter zero into the "VAT on Fees" field to represent reclaiming all VAT on fees. Similarly, reclaiming VAT on costs involves subtracting the VAT from your costs and entering the reduced cost figures into the relevant fields. For further guidance on VAT reclamation, it's advisable to consult the UK's official government website and seek advice from a tax professional. You can also check our Free UK VAT Calculator Tool for more info!

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What are eBay fees?

eBay seller account fees encompass various charges, including final value fees, insertion fees, and listing upgrade fees.

    • Final value fees are incurred when an item is sold and are calculated based on the item's final sale price and its category.

    • Insertion fees are applied each time you list a product in your shop.

    • Additional charges for listing upgrades are levied for each upgrade applied to a listing.

How much are eBay sellers fees?

On eBay, private sellers enjoy the benefit of free listings, with the option to list up to 1,000 items per month at no charge. After exhausting these free listings, a 35p insertion fee is applied per listing, unless you have an eBay Shop, in which case you may receive more free listings.

Once an item is sold, a final value fee is incurred, calculated as a percentage of the total sale amount, including postage, handling, and other applicable fees. This fee varies by category, typically around 12.55%, with an additional fixed charge of £0.30 per order.

The cost of listing upgrade fees varies based on the specific feature being utilized and the extent of the listing enhancement.

Payment transaction fees depend on the chosen payment method. For PayPal transactions, a fee of 2.9% plus £0.30 per transaction is applicable, while under eBay's Managed Payment system, a fee of 12.8% plus £0.30 per transaction is charged, which may result in slightly lower overall costs compared to PayPal.

What happens if you don't pay eBay fees in the UK?

eBay will deactivate your account and stop you from buying or selling things until you pay up.

    What percentage does eBay take?

Mostly, standard selling fees on eBay comprise a final value fee of 10% of the total sales price, along with an insertion fee of $0.35. eBay.com sellers are granted 50 free insertion fees each month, with the possibility of obtaining additional insertion fees through Store subscriptions.

Do eBay fees include VAT in the UK?

Fees for private sellers include VAT while fees for business sellers exclude VAT.

How does ebay calculate the final value fee in the UK?

Ebay calculates the final value fee using what they term the "total amount of the sale," which encompasses shipping costs. Typically, a percentage is applied to this total, with an additional fixed fee occasionally added.
